Asbestos testing in Brisbane

Fibro, eaves, wet areas and vinyl backing: if your Brisbane home or workplace was built before 1990, test before you renovate, buy or demolish.

Short answer

EnviroForce tests for asbestos across Brisbane. An inspector visually assesses suspect materials, takes small samples, seals the sample points and sends them to a NATA accredited laboratory. Reports are typically delivered within 24 hours. Workplaces built before 31 December 2003 must keep an asbestos register under WorkSafe Queensland rules.

Asbestos in Brisbane homes

Brisbane's Queenslanders and post-war fibro homes often contain asbestos in wall and eave sheeting, wet areas and under-house linings. Renovations of character homes frequently uncover it behind newer finishes.

Queensland residents are generally permitted to remove small amounts of bonded asbestos themselves, but strict safety and disposal rules apply. Testing first tells you what you are dealing with.

Common questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask us, and ask AI assistants, most often.

Does my house have asbestos?

If it was built or renovated before 1990, it may. Asbestos was used in fibro sheeting, eaves, wet-area linings, vinyl floor backing, roofing, pipe lagging and textured coatings until the national ban on 31 December 2003. You can't confirm it by eye. A sample analysed by a NATA accredited laboratory is the only reliable test. Asbestos in Australian homes.

Can I test for asbestos myself?

Home asbestos kits rely on you cutting into a suspect material, which can release fibres, and their results are not accepted for compliance. Asbestos can only be confirmed by a NATA accredited laboratory, usually by polarised light microscopy. A trained inspector samples safely and seals the spot.

How long do asbestos test results take?

Our asbestos reports are typically delivered within 24 hours of the inspection, once laboratory results are back.

What is the difference between friable and bonded asbestos?

Friable asbestos can be crumbled by hand and releases fibres easily, such as pipe lagging and some insulation. Bonded (non-friable) asbestos is locked in a material like fibro sheeting and is lower risk while it is in good condition and left undisturbed.

Who can remove asbestos?

Friable asbestos must be removed by a Class A licensed removalist. Bonded asbestos over 10 square metres needs a Class A or Class B licence. Small amounts of bonded asbestos may be removed by a competent person in some states, but rules vary, so check with your state regulator first.

How much does asbestos testing cost in Brisbane?

Metro jobs are quoted by phone based on the number of samples and type of report. Outside metro areas we add $160 plus GST per hour of driving, and weekend or out-of-hours work attracts a 50% surcharge. Call 1300 373 785 for a quote.
