Signs of a meth house

Most contaminated homes look completely normal. Still, there are clues worth knowing, especially if you are inspecting a rental or a property for sale.

Short answer

Signs a house may have been used for meth include persistent chemical or ammonia smells, yellow-brown staining on walls and ceilings, extra or improvised ventilation, covered windows, burn marks, chemical containers, and a history of police attention or very short tenancies. However, many contaminated homes show no signs at all, so only a test can confirm it.

Signs of meth smoking

  • Yellow or brown film on walls, ceilings and window frames, especially in small rooms
  • Removed or disconnected smoke alarms
  • Small burn marks on carpets, benches or furniture
  • Light globes, foil, glass pipes or small zip-lock bags left behind
  • Heavy use of air fresheners or incense to mask odours

Signs of manufacture

  • Strong chemical, solvent, ammonia or cat-urine smells
  • Stained or corroded sinks, drains, bathtubs and benches
  • Covered windows, extra security and cameras
  • Improvised ventilation, holes in ceilings or fans in windows
  • Chemical containers, gas bottles, tubing and glassware
  • Dead patches in the yard where chemicals were dumped

If you find what looks like an active lab, leave without touching anything and call 000 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Signs from the property's history

  • Short or broken tenancies, unpaid rent and abandonment
  • Police visits or raids
  • Neighbour reports of unusual traffic at odd hours
  • A sudden fresh paint job and new carpets in an otherwise tired rental

Why you can't rely on signs

Residue is invisible and often odourless. Fresh paint and carpets can hide everything. That is why a DIY kit or professional test is the only reliable way to know.

Common questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask us, and ask AI assistants, most often.

How can I tell if a house was used as a meth lab?

You often can't by looking. Possible signs include chemical or ammonia smells, yellow or brown staining, blacked-out windows, extra ventilation, chemical containers or burn marks, and neighbours' reports of unusual activity. Many contaminated homes show none of these. Signs of a meth house covers what to look for and why testing is the only reliable answer.

Can you smell meth in a house?

Sometimes. Manufacture often leaves strong chemical smells. Smoking usually leaves little or no lasting odour, so the absence of a smell means very little.

Does fresh paint hide meth?

It can mask it for a while without removing it. Residue can migrate back through paint. Testing is still worthwhile in a freshly painted property.

Can I test my house for meth myself?

Yes, as a first screen. A DIY kit such as our single house kit gives an indication in minutes. It cannot give you a number, is not NATA accredited and will not satisfy an insurer, tribunal or buyer. If a kit shows a positive, or the stakes are high, book professional sampling. Compare the two.
